Liberals vs. Conservatives
Why conservative thought is almost always backward
and immoral.
From Merriam
Webster online we find the following:
conservatism
Function: noun
Date: 1835
1 capitalized a : the principles and
policies of a Conservative party b : the Conservative
party
2 a : disposition in politics to preserve what is
established b : a political philosophy based on
tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions,
and preferring gradual development to abrupt change
3 : the tendency to prefer an existing or traditional
situation to change
liberalism
Function: noun
Date: 1819
1 : the quality or state of being liberal
2 a often capitalized : a movement in modern
Protestantism emphasizing intellectual liberty and the spiritual and
ethical content of Christianity b : a theory in
economics emphasizing individual freedom from restraint and usually
based on free competition, the self-regulating market, and the gold
standard c : a political philosophy based on belief in
progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy
of the individual and standing for the protection of political and
civil liberties d capitalized : the principles
and policies of a Liberal party
Now that we have the definitions, let us see
them applied to history. Please keep in mind the
liberalism/conservatism is not only economic in nature. Also,
keep in mind that this is not Republicans vs. Democrats, because
even Republican administrations must be credited with liberal
ideas. Conversely, Democrats have also pushed for things that
would be considered anathema to liberal principles.
-
The birth of our great United States was started
by liberal thinking men. During the American Revolution
the conservatives were the Tories, they did not want to break
with Britain and wanted to maintain the status quo. Of
course conservative nay-sayers will point out that the American
Revolution was more dynamic then this, but if the Tories had
prevailed it would have been a win for conservatism.
-
Our constitution's basic principles were fruits
from the "Age of Enlightenment". Of course these
were liberal ideas not conservative ones.
-
Slavery: Who wanted to keep the status
quo, conservatives or progressive thinking abolitionists?
-
Women's right to vote. A liberal notion
for its time.
-
Social Security.
-
Forty hour work week, paid sick time, over-time
pay, paid
vacations, child labor laws. Unions fought hard (even with
their blood) for some of these rights and protections that we now take for granted.
Conservatives were all against these laws because they said it
would bankrupt the nation.
-
Civil rights legislation.
There are many more then this of
course. Email me with your suggestions. webmaster
If we really want to see what happens to a country when only
conservative ideas prevail look no further then those Islamic
countries which are still living in the past.
Another thing that conservatives love to do
is lump all liberals together. This liberal, for instance,
supports the death penalty.
And finally, conservatives love to point to
communism as the ultimate goal of liberalism. This may be true
for some liberals but most liberals find communism a failed concept
because it really is more like a religion.
